Meet Shining Light Beach School Foundation
Shining Light Beach School's mission is to use education to diminish poverty, build a healthy economy, cultivate future leaders, and provide opportunities for children in remote and impoverished areas of Ishahayi and Ikare, Lagos.

“When children are healthy and not worried about their next meal, they can focus on learning valuable skills for their lives. ”

“We strongly believe that every child deserves a place where they can learn skills and gain an education to set them up for life.”
Chapelwood Foundation's Impact
Last year, The Chapelwood Foundation funded the construction of additional classrooms at Shining Light Beach School and essential furniture, including desks and chairs. Over the years, with support from The Chapelwood Foundation, we have contributed to the school’s programming, curriculum, and daily operational needs, all aimed at enhancing children's education in Ishahayi. Shining Light Beach School serves as a beacon of hope for this remote and impoverished community.
Shining Light Beach School Foundation's Story
The Shining Light Beach School Foundation provides educational opportunities for children in the remote, impoverished areas of Ishahayi and Ikaare in Lagos, Nigeria. The area is so isolated that students must take a boat to reach their school daily. The foundation’s mission is to use education as a tool to reduce poverty, build a healthy economy, and cultivate future community leaders.
Shining Light Beach School offers high-quality education and essential resources to over 220 children from Ishahayi, a small Yoruba fishing village with an estimated population of 500, located on the barrier island between Lagos and Badagry. Founded in 2005 by expatriate spouses, the Ishahayi Beach School Foundation is dedicated to supporting the children in this village. The school focuses on empowering young minds and fostering a brighter future for the community.
The campus includes a library, computer room, nursery school, primary school, and living quarters for 23 boarding students. What started as a modest initiative has evolved into a thriving educational ecosystem. From its humble beginnings with 70
students learning under a thatched roof, the school now serves over 220 eager learners.
Elizabeth Salami works at the school alongside her mother and brother. She explains that the school was established when her mother visited the community as a missionary. Driven by a desire to enable everyone to read the Word of God, she began teaching fundamental literacy to the local children. As awareness of her efforts grew, people from surrounding communities began offering support.
