Meet Starfish Kenya

Starfish Kenya is dedicated to making the words, "Jesus loves me, this I know," a reality in the lives of the most vulnerable children in Kenya.

"You made me love God and seek Him more because I feel Him every day. We may turn out to be His own."

"My prayer is that God will expand Starfish Kenya so that House of Hope can support more kids who need help."

Chapelwood Foundation's Impact

The Chapelwood Foundation provided a grant to support one of Starfish Kenya’s partner schools in implementing its Grade 8 curriculum. Kenya is currently adopting a new educational framework known as the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which emphasizes hands-on learning, collaborative activities, critical thinking, problem solving, and digital literacy. As part of this transition, all schools in Kenya are required to implement the new curriculum for Grade 8 students by 2024. The support from The Chapelwood Foundation enabled Starfish Kenya to gain physical
and digital access to this updated curriculum.

Starfish Kenya's Story

Starfish Kenya is dedicated to making the message “Jesus loves me, this I know” a reality for Kenya's most vulnerable children. Their mission is to help these children experience God’s love by addressing their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Starfish Kenya was established in 2001 when Pam and Roy Newberry traveled to Kenya and witnessed the urgent need to help children affected by the AIDS crisis. The situation felt overwhelming, but the story of the starfish continually resonated with them. The story recounts an old man walking along a shore strewn with thousands of starfish that had beached and perished after a storm. A young man picked them up one by one and threw them back into the ocean. The old man mocked him, asking, “Why do you bother? How can what you’re doing possibly make a difference?” The young man picked up another starfish and flung it back into the water, replying, “It made a difference to that one.” This exchange inspired Pam and Roy to understand that helping even just one child could make a meaningful impact, much like the story of the starfish.

Today, Starfish Kenya supports and serves over 600 children. The organization collaborates with local schools, the House of Hope, and St. Anna Care Centre. They have built classrooms, dormitories, multi-purpose facilities, chemistry and computer labs, as well as training facilities and a dairy farm. Additionally, they have cultivated acres of land to produce food for the children, generate income, and
create recreational areas. Starfish Kenya also provides uniforms, school supplies, curriculum materials, library books, and funding for teacher training.
